Healthy grass means healthy cows. At Fonterra we’re passionate about grass and we employ experts to help advise us on how to grow the healthiest grass for our cows. Aotearoa New Zealand is one of the few places in the world where cows can graze on grass almost all year round, thanks to ideal climate conditions for growing lush, green pastures with plenty of rainfall and lots of sunshine.
This means we can make use of natural resources to support farming systems, and minimise the use of fertiliser and feed. With 96% of our cows’ diet being grass, eating around 50kg of nutrient rich pasture a day, these systems lead to well cared for, healthier cattle which live longer, as well as use less vital resources like water and energy, compared to other methods.
