Fonterra joins forces with local school kids to keep New Zealand beautiful

A few actions by many can make a big difference.

The spring sunshine shone in true Southland style as more than 300 people banded together on September 27 to spruce up the Edendale and Wyndham communities.

The clean-up, organised by staff at Fonterra’s Edendale site, has become an annual tradition. Around 250 pupils from Edendale and Wyndham Primary Schools were joined by their teachers and Fonterra staff for a couple of hours to collect rubbish around the two townships.

Fonterra’s Edendale Environment Manager Vijai Lal said it’s a great way to come together to care for the places we work and live.

"When we collect and pick up litter, we all make a difference. It helps the whole community look better."

The event is inspired by Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week, and Vijai says the kids really seem to enjoy getting out of the classroom to join forces with Fonterra.

“We like to end the event with a BBQ lunch at each of the schools. It’s a great opportunity for us all to come together and it’s a small reward for the effort they put in.”

The teams collected around 40 bags of rubbish.
