Fonterra recently picked up the inaugural Innovation and Technology Award at the South Canterbury Business Awards for its Nitrogen Management Programme.
The programme, which is a world first in terms of scale, helps Fonterra farmers to be better informed when making decisions to reduce nitrogen loss or provide compliance information to Regional Councils.
“Around 90% of our farmers take part in the programme, which is one of the largest funded environmental good projects currently being undertaken in New Zealand.
“We developed innovative technology including the online portal that allows real time information with multiple users at any time, which coupled with GIS mapping provides accurate physical information to create reports for each farm,” said Mat.
The win was a real team effort with the Clandeboye site submitting the entry. Site Manager Steve McKnight said it is great recognition for the Co-operative and a demonstration of how innovative the it can be at all stages of the supply chain.
Farm Solutions Manager Mat Cullen said the award recognises the good work farmers are doing and how the Co-operative is supporting them.
