PM drops by for breakfast

There was something a little special about KickStart Breakfast club at Holy Family School in Porirua last Friday as the Prime Minister Rt Hon.

Bill English and Minister of Social Development Hon Anne Tolley popped in for some Weet-Bix with Anchor milk.

They were there to celebrate the programme, which Fonterra runs in partnership with Sanitarium and the Ministry of Social Development, reaching more than 900 schools.

Around 60 kids from Holy Family School start their day the KickStart way and as he enjoyed his breakfast the PM was asked the hard questions by some of the kids including if he uses maths in his job, and what does he actually do?

Of course he uses maths, especially to count votes, and what does he do? Well he said, sometimes it’s the most straight forward questions that are the most difficult to answer.

Fonterra In-School Programmes Manager Katalin Csengo says it was an exciting morning for everyone involved.

“There was a real buzz in the air. The kids were so excited and the volunteers did a great job, as they do every school day, of putting on the breakfast.

“Without them, and the support of our farmers, none of this would happen. This isn’t just a partnership between Fonterra, Sanitarium and The Ministry of Social Development, it’s also a partnership with the school and the community,” she says.

More than 14 million breakfasts have now been served through the KickStart Breakfast programme, which is available to all schools in New Zealand.
