Trees for the Future

2 MINUTE READ

At Fonterra, we aspire to be a leader in sustainability and climate change is a large part of this. We are dedicated to playing our part in limiting global warming to 1.5°C, and our actions reflect this commitment.

As part of our climate journey, Fonterra Indonesia is taking significant steps to implement sustainable business practices across our business.

At our Cikarang factory, we've undertaken several green initiatives, such as installing solar panel roofing systems and adopting sustainable packaging. These efforts are part of our broader strategy to achieve a 50 per cent reduction in manufacturing and supply chain (Scope 1&2) emissions and a 30 per cent reduction in on farm emissions (Scope 3) by 2030, from a 2018 baseline and to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

M. Ali Nasution, Operations Director of Fonterra Indonesia

Our sustainability efforts extend beyond our factory. We planted 1,000 trees near our operations in the vicinity, located in GIIC Cikarang industrial area and Sirnabaya Village, Telukjambe, Karawang. This initiative is a testament to our commitment to positively impacting both the environment and the local communities.

"We’re committed to making this program sustainable. By planting trees, we aim to reduce emissions and support ecosystem balance, especially in the areas where we operate. Plus, we’re making the air around us cleaner, cooler, and more pleasant," explains Ali.

This tree-planting effort was carried out in collaboration with Trees4Trees, a non-profit organization focused on reforestation.

We aim to create urban forests in the GIIC industrial area and support the local community by planting community forests in Sirnabaya Village. The trees selected are well-suited to the local conditions, ensuring a high survival rate. We also partnered with IPB University for microbial application trials to maintain respiration and humidity, thus enhancing tree resilience in unpredictable weather.

A diverse mix of 1.000 trees, including sengon, jabon, trembesi, gmelina, suren, teak, petai, and jackfruit, were planted in GIIC and Sirnabaya Village. This initiative, part of the "Doing Good Together" program, involved around 33 enthusiastic Fonterra employees as volunteer tree planters, and local farmers.

"Through this tree-planting event, we aim to raise awareness and educate on the importance of tree planting and environmentally friendly practices," says Ali. "We hope this initiative will strengthen the green culture within Fonterra and inspire broader environmental preservation efforts from all stakeholders."
