Osteoporosis, a silent and preventable disease, continues to impact millions of Indonesians. 2 out of 5 Indonesians are at risk of osteoporosis[1] and with 63% of elderly individuals experiencing reduced mobility due to weakened bones2. Addressing this growing concern, Fonterra Brands Indonesia's Anlene™ and the Indonesian Osteoporosis Association (PEROSI) have launched the “Fun Walk Hari Osteoporosis Nasional 2024.” This educational campaign, held simultaneously in Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Medan, and Malang on 15th December 2024, encourages Indonesians to stay active and reduce their risk of osteoporosis in later years. The campaign also commemorates National Osteoporosis Day and aligns with the global World Osteoporosis Day theme: "Say No To Fragile Bones". Anlene™ plans to expand this initiative next year, reaching even more people nationwide.
The campaign was launched in response to Indonesia’s aging population. In 2020, the country had 28.5 million elderly individuals, accounting for 10% of its total population. According to Statistics Indonesia's 2022 report, this figure was expected to rise to 20.5% by 2050[2]. As the elderly population increases, maintaining good health becomes essential. People should take proactive steps early to stay physically active and minimize mobility issues as they age. Projections show that osteoporosis will be a major concern, with over 50% of osteoporosis-related hip fractures expected to occur in Asia by 2050[3].
Thousands of participants, including community groups, PEROSI representatives, and the general public, joined the “Fun Walk Hari Osteoporosis Nasional 2024” campaign. During the event, Anlene™ offered free bone density check-ups using their bone scanners, while PEROSI hosted education talk shows with the theme: 1) Build Bone Density Early, Strong Bones for the Whole Body, Prevent Fragile Fractures; 2) Detect Bone Loss Earlier and Apply the Right Therapy to Protect the Future from Disabilities; 3) Healthy Nutrition, Strong Bones; 4) Stay Active to Keep Bones Strong and Free from Osteoporosis. Interactive games and other engaging activities were available, bringing a more exciting experience.
The Health Ministry’s Director of Noncommunicable Disease Prevention and Control (P2PTM), Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi, emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration for osteoporosis and said this is crucial information everyone must understand. The Health Ministry highly values these strategic partnerships, as they play a significant role in reducing the prevalence of osteoporosis in Indonesia.”
Dr. Siti further stated, “According to the Health Ministry’s recent report, osteoporosis affects 23% of women aged 50–70 years and 53% of women aged 70 years and older in Indonesia[4]. Treating osteoporosis is a lifelong process and often brings economic and social challenges to families who care for affected individuals. This condition often goes undetected until significant bone damage has occurred. Osteoporosis can be prevented from an early age through a healthy lifestyle, adequate nutrition, regular physical activity, and routine check-ups. This information should be a concern for all parties so that we can work together to maintain the bone health of the Indonesian people.”
Chairman of the Indonesia Osteoporosis Association (PEROSI), Dr. Tirza Z. Tamin, stated, “According to the Health Ministry’s report, osteoporosis remains a significant concern. As such, PEROSI is committed to educating people, promoting early diagnosis, and ensuring effective management of osteoporosis. This year, we commemorated National Osteoporosis Day 2024 across five cities, spreading awareness about osteoporosis prevention to a broader audience. Walking 10,000 steps a day is highly recommended to prevent osteoporosis. Regular walking helps maintain bone density and slows down bone mass loss[5].”
Yauwanan Wigneswaran, President Director, Fonterra Brands Indonesia, stated "Anlene™ has been a pioneer and leader in adult bone health for decades, consistently inspiring the people of Indonesia to lead active and healthy lives into their later years. This year, we have conducted free bone scan, accompanied by educational programs and nutritional solutions to support strong bones, flexible joints, and active muscles. Out of over 150.000 people who underwent scan during the January-December 2024 period, we found that almost a staggering 50%, approximately 67,547 individuals are at moderate to high risk. This means they are osteopenic, having a bone density score of less than -1.0. Therefore, meeting your body’s nutritional needs and staying active, is the key to lifelong vitality. The time to listen to what our bodies need is now, and take action for a stronger and healthier future.”
Yauwanan added, “As part of our commitment, we continue our strategic collaboration with the Health Ministry and PEROSI to encourage more people to pay attention to their bone health and stay active. This includes promoting our upcoming “Walking 10,000 Steps Every Day” initiative, a simple yet highly effective activity for strengthening bones. During the campaign, we provided free bone density checkups for those interested in learning more about their bone health. Yesterday’s event was just the beginning. We plan to host another campaign with more participants early next year, in Jakarta on 12th January 2025 and Surabaya on 26th January 2025. At Anlene™, we believe that with proper nutrition and an active lifestyle, age is not a barrier to good health and mobility, and everyone deserves to live life to the fullest.”
Scientific & Nutrition Manager Fonterra Brands Indonesia, Haryadi Raharjo further explains "Anlene™ contains complete nutrition specifically formulated for adults. Just two glasses daily provide 100% of the recommended intake for calcium, collagen, protein, vitamin C, B6, B12, and potassium. With no added sugar, it’s a healthy choice for preventing osteoporosis.”
